Kia's Second-year Motorsports Program Clinches the Top Spot in Two Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Standings Following Season-Ending Race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course IRVINE, Calif., September 17, 2011 - After just two seasons and 20 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) races, Kia Motors America's motorsports program achieved championship status today when the No. 10 Infinity Audio Forte Koup crossed the finish line in seventh place and earned Nic Jönsson and Kia Racing the Driver and Team titles, respectively, for the 2011 CTSCC in the Street Tuner (ST) class. Kia and racing partner Kinetic Motorsports entered the season finale at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with narrow three-point leads in both standings and co-drivers Jönsson and Michael Galati used the Forte Koup's braking, handling and fuel-efficiency advantages on the 13-turn circuit to battle a field of more than 30 competitors during the 2.5-hour race, propelling Kia to its first-ever GRAND-AM road racing championships. "Kia Racing recorded a number of historic firsts in 2011 and consistently exceeded everyone's expectations, and winning our first-ever GRAND-AM championship is an accomplishment the entire Kia Motors organization celebrates and takes great pride in," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Congratulations to Nic, Michael and everyone at Kinetic Motorsports whose hard work and commitment to continuous improvement led to the outstanding performance of the Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koups all season and made this achievement possible." "Second-year motorsports programs are not supposed to win championships, but Kia Motors and Kinetic Motorsports have been committed to being the best since we formed our partnership in late-2009," said championship-winning driver Jönsson. "The Kia Forte Koups have been fantastic since getting off the truck at Daytona in January thanks to the tireless dedication of the team. We couldn't be happier with the end result, and I have to thank Michael Galati whose skill and experience was invaluable in this championship run." After qualifying in the third position on Friday, Michael Galati maneuvered the No. 10 Forte Koup into second place at the 30-minute mark before a full course caution went into effect and all of the top five ST cars headed to pit row for a driver change and refueling. Galati climbed out, and Jönsson jumped behind the wheel for the final two hours of the race. Jönsson returned to the track in seventh place and began moving his way through the field, eventually settling into fifth place with just over one hour remaining and repeatedly changed positions with two MINIs and two MazdaSpeed3s, who were all in the top five. A caution-filled race kept the 71-car field bunched up tight and made for some great racing action for fans; it also made for some nervous Kia Racing supporters from the brand's research and development center in nearby Ann Arbor, MI, who made the trip to Ohio to cheer on Kia to the championship. With 30-minutes to go in the race, Jönsson executed a perfect inside pass of one of the MazdaSpeed3s and moved the No. 10 Forte Koup into fourth place. Just a few laps later, the first-place MINI lost all power and another full-course caution came out, with Jönsson now sitting in third place. The EMCO Gears Classic returned to green-flag racing with less than 10 minutes remaining, and with the Driver and Team ST championships in sight, Jönsson cruised to a seventh-place finish as his Kinetic Motorsports teammates began celebrating Kia and Kinetic Motorsports' first-ever GRAND-AM road racing titles on pit row. Race fans can watch Kia's championship-winning run on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m. ET on SPEED. About Kia Motors America

New Report from Leading Online Resource Highlights Kia in Non-Luxury Segment IRVINE, Calif., August 17, 2011 - Leading online automotive resource Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com recently reported the top automotive manufacturers with the lowest average Total Cost of Ownership for the initial five-year ownership period, with Kia Motors America (KMA) landing in the top position for non-luxury brands. Calculating depreciation, expected fuel costs, insurance, maintenance and repair costs, state fees and more, Kia's average Total Cost of Ownership came in below $40,000 over a five-year ownership period, besting all other non-luxury brands with a full-model lineup. "Kia Motors is committed to offering consumers a full array of high-quality cars and CUVs that provide a combination of world-class styling, cutting-edge technology and an abundance of standard convenience and safety features, and being recognized as a cost of ownership leader by kbb.com is further proof of the brand's compelling value equation," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Consumers are looking to make smart purchases and stretch their dollars, and every Kia vehicle allows them to do just that with low starting prices and outstanding fuel economy, without sacrificing fun-to-drive performance or the modern amenities new car shoppers now expect." Total Cost of Ownership is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs. According to the website, depreciation plays the largest role in Total Cost of Ownership, followed by the cost of fuel during the initial five-year ownership period. The company then calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying a valuation methodology along with critical financial data from third-party providers. Kelley Blue Book's goal for providing the Total Cost of Ownership for vehicles is so consumers can better understand the overall financial implications associated with vehicle ownership through the initial five-year ownership period. Kelley Blue Book's Total Cost of Ownership features easy-to-understand charts and graphs on kbb.com to help car shoppers make informed purchase decisions by breaking down the typical ownership costs for a particular vehicle. Popular U.S. Built¹ CUV Base Model Gets One of the Highest Ratings for 36-Month Residual Value Index
|
IRVINE, Calif., May 31, 2011 - The Kia Sorento has been the brand's best-selling vehicle every month since arriving in January 2010, and with the addition of several enhancements the popular crossover now has one of the highest residual value ratings for the 2012 model year in the compact CUV segment from ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and a leading provider of data and consulting services to the automotive industry. The rating of 58-percent of original manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for 36 months2 of ownership is a full 10 points higher than the 2011 model year residual value and can be attributed to the Sorento's class-leading horsepower3 and fuel economy4 with the newly available 2.4-liter engine featuring Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). In addition, consumer demand for Sorento has outpaced expectations, and this momentum reflects the significant residual value increase for the 2012 Sorento. As one of the seven new products launched under Kia's design-led transformation, the Sorento has achieved a number of historic firsts for Kia, including being the first vehicle built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Georgia and becoming the company's first vehicle to surpass 100,000 units in a single year. "With gas prices above $4 per gallon in many parts of the country, fuel economy has become an even more important element in consumers' decision-making process when considering a new car, and the Kia Sorento's all-new GDI engine delivers increased horsepower, lower emissions and outstanding fuel efficiency by achieving up to 32 miles per gallon on the highway," said Tom Loveless, vice president, sales, Kia Motors America (KMA). "Kia's value proposition has never been stronger, and with Sorento's high residual value rating by ALG, buyers can benefit from higher resale values and excellent leasing options." Production of the 2012 Kia Sorento recently began at KMMG and the updated CUV now offers class-leading power (191 hp) and fuel economy along with cutting-edge technologies, including an available gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and Kia's new UVO powered by Microsoft®5 hands-free infotainment and communications system based on the Windows Embedded Automotive platform. Also new for the 2012 model year are power-folding mirrors, memory seat/power passenger seat, ventilated driver's seat and heated and wood trim steering wheel. "The new generation 2011 Kia Sorento was launched early in 2010 with the right balance of low pricing and generous content, said Eric Lyman, director, Residual Value Solutions for ALG. "Based on ALG residual value forecasts and information from our transaction database, demand has clearly outpaced initial expectations for the Sorento. While overall incentive spending and fleet sales are down, retail sales have shown significant growth spurred on by robust consumer demand. As a result, ALG has reflected this positive momentum in its residual forecast for the 2012 Kia Sorento." Pricing for the dynamic 2012 CUV begins at $21,2506 for the base trim, offering such standard convenience features as air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability with three months complimentary service7, Bluetooth®8 wireless technology and MP3 connectivity. The Sorento combines Kia's distinctive design language with a comprehensive list of standard safety, convenience and technology features and was named a 2010 "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
